New start, motel rates, meeting locations 2010

Arrowhead 2010 proposed race changes:

The City of Intl Falls and a local business sponsor are proposing the Ice skating Arena for the gear check and the VFW club for signin, pre-race meetings and spaghetti dinner.

The city is inviting local officials, Mayor, Chamber of Commerce and US Senator to attend meetings, plus a few other nice surprises.

There will be a large heated tent at start in center of town, with lots of plowed parking. The local snowmobile club, emergency medical EMT's, ham radio operators and drivers with trailers to assist as volunteers.

There will be traffic signs posted Hwy 53 crossing to warn traffic.

Arrowhead Race, Motel offers Intl Falls near the start:

I bought them used, rode in 'em once, and decided they were too big.

The toes are superficially scuffed. Other than that, they're in really nice aesthetic and functional shape, and the guy I bought them from claims they were produced after Lake improved the BOA lacing system.

I'd sell them for $150 or trade them for a size 48 pair in the same condition.

Am I going to get lost?

Now that I'm in the Big Show, one of my fears is getting lost/taking a wrong turn. I'm especially concerned about crossing elephant lake. Do I need to study the maps beforehand, or is it pretty well marked? Should I mark out mile markers on the map and carry it with me? One race report mentioned someone coming to a T and not knowing which way to go.

Reopening registration for 2010

The "powers that be" i.e., the DNR, have told us tentatively that we can allow more participants this year, so we are reopening the Arrowhead 2010 registration until Dec. 1st.

We expect to make improvements to the start of the race and will announce new motel rates and venue/start changes in Interntional Falls shortly.

The City of International Falls is kindly looking to provide more assistance to the 2010 event and we will keep you posted as the details become finalized.

Thank you to all the Arrowhead volunteers. We sincerely appreciate your contributions and we look forward to your participation again this year.
With the impressive list of racers, we will need your assistance more than ever.

cantilevers for wide tires

I'm not a big fan of disk brakes (I'm definitely in the minority here). I recently bought some canitlever brakes ignorantly thinking that any of them would work with fat tires (I'll be running 2.55's). They didn't. Does anyone have any advice (or specific models of brakes that work)? I remember Charlie F having cantis on his bike last year. Any advice Charlie?

Start Grip Tape

I can tell that I have not classic skied in 5 years because my knowledge is way out of date. However, the November 2009 issue of Silent Sports highlights this old (2004?) offering from Start.

Manufacturer claims the tape is good for 200-300 km. Might be worth playing with, despite already having a multitude of various kick waxes.

A good question would be whether it would still stick to a ski base at -25F?

Another question would be whether you could apply it to a ski base at -25F?

The answers to these questions depends upon the glass transistion temperature (Tg) for the adhesive used in the tape.

Mittens vs Pogies and other clothing ??

Any thoughts? It looks like (from the photos) that it was mixed.

I have heard good things about the Black Diamond Mercury Mitts and Granite Gear Lutsen Mitts.

Epic looks like some nice pogies, but $$$. What about if you have to get off the bike?

It also looks like there was some riders that went with a full wind shell as an outer layer and others with a soft shell. What about on the legs? Winter tights and some soft shell pants or more of a traditional shell pant?

On the face? I have a couple of baclava's, but neither provide much protection to the nose, as it is difficult to breathe during exercise when covering the nose and mouth. I'm a helmet guy so I will probably wear a ski helmet.

Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

Mukluks and Cycling

I am going bike this year and am pondering the merits of different footwear. I am interested in trying Steger mukluks. Has anyone used them. I was thinking a sole stiffener of some sort with Power Grip straps. Suggestions? I have a size 11.5-12 foot...so a lot of the Lake shoe ideas won't work (I think).

Footwear for Runners Questions

Am planning on running the AhD135 this coming February, and wanted to know what types of footwear had worked in past events(particularly with the cold/frostbite issues)? Was planning on layered socks, Trail Shoes with Goretex, plus gators......Is it recommended that something else be worn to protect against frostbite?
