Am planning on running the AhD135 this coming February, and wanted to know what types of footwear had worked in past events(particularly with the cold/frostbite issues)? Was planning on layered socks, Trail Shoes with Goretex, plus gators......Is it recommended that something else be worn to protect against frostbite? __________________ brian tate |

hello Brian!
it worked for me: waterproof trail shoes (one year goretex, the other eVent), very breathable thin socks, gaiters (not for covering the whole shoe, just to avoid snow coming in), a wool or thick sock cut and put over the shoe (like a bootie), and a Yaktrax over it to fix the sock and avoid slipping. I learned the last trick (over sock and yaktrax) from Sarah Lowell in 2007
good luck!

Reply with quote | #3 | Do you cut the sock so that your shoe essentially sits in it? Then just one sock inside the shoe like a thin Drymax?
Thanks,
Jim

Reply with quote | #4 | here you have an example... actually, the socks I used in the race were cut a little longer (like 2 or 3 cm)

the Yaktrax are a little bit rusty
And yes, Jim, I only wore a thin sock inside the shoe (mine was coolmax, but it's the same). I didn't want to feel my feet wet beacuse of the sweat... because they could freeze during the night. During the first morning and until Gateway store, i didn't use the outer sock and yaktrax, and i didn't feel cold. After then, i wore the whole system until the finish.
Anyway.. this is MY combination... I think you should try it yourself before the race, make sure it works for you , and maybe bring extra socks... just in case
Ah!, and i brought a super-warm socks to use during the bivys
bye!,
